RENOWNED
local artist Truong Tuan Kiet has made a big name for himself
in a very short space of time. On more than one occasion,
he’s amazed art critics up and down the country with
paintings that have been described as “fascinating”.
.
The subject matter of Kiet’s paintings varies, but the
underlying theme is always the same: tranquility coupled with
a strong sense of beauty. Kiet, 31, appears to gave made a
deliberate decision to capture the “real” essence of
Vietnam in his paintings.
.
Delicate hues depict all manner of Vietnamese people in the
county side, traditional scenes in Vietnamese villages and
ancient cultures and customs that date back thousands of
years.
.
Often, the young artist’s oil paintings on canvas add a dash
of colour to otherwise ordinary – some might even say dull
– scenes.
.
Last year, Kiet decided to capture the atmosphere surrounding
celebrations for the 990th anniversary of Hanoi
with a collection of striking oil paintings that used an
unusual mix of colours. His latest exhibition in Ho Chi Minh
City, entitled Flower Street, offers art lovers the chance to
gaze on a body of work that is “elegant”.
.
The titles of his paintings say it all: Spring Sunshine, The
Village Pond, Peace, A Late Afternoon In Autumn, A Street At
Night and Art The Rain.
The young artist uses a sliding spectrum of colour in all his
paintings, a method he likes to employ in order to give
emphasis to specific themes in his paintings.
.
In fact, it sometimes seems that Kiet finds it difficult to
contain his feelings on the canvas, and his emotions often
appear to cry out loudest during those silent moments on
small, country paths, pastoral landscapes and under quarter
moons. His youthfulness allows Kiet to work with unparalleled
passion and energy.
.
He is constantly engaged in artistic research as he seeks to
learn more about himself and his surrounding environs. He says
he understands that the life of an artist is often fraught
with difficulty, but he knows that, at the end of the day, he
can look back on his development and say that he tried as best
as he could.
.
This emotion, this passion, this maturity is the driving force
of Kiet as an artist today. Dao Minh Tri, deputy
secretary-general of the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts
Association, describes Kiet as a young - but mature –
artist who feels a strong sense of responsibility
towards his creations.
.
Others, such as Russian – born Ulga Ivgotalotofkoff, agree.
“He’s pretty good, yes,” she says. “I think he paints
like a young man who does not want to paint by numbers.”
